How Botox Injections Work?

Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) is a precise medical treatment that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles by blocking nerve signals responsible for muscle contractions. This action smooths dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements such as frowning, smiling, or squinting, without affecting nearby muscles.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Chin dimpling
  • Jawline definition and masseter muscle reduction

A typical Botox session lasts 15–30 minutes, with visible results appearing gradually within 3 to 14 days and lasting up to 3–4 months.

Botox Injections — FAQs

Botox is a botulinum toxin type A that temporarily blocks nerve signals to muscles. As a result, targeted muscles stop contracting, which smooths or prevents dynamic wrinkles (like those on the forehead, between the eyebrows, or around the eyes). The same mechanism also helps treat migraines, hyperhidrosis, muscle spasms, blepharospasm, strabismus, and more.

Aesthetic:

  • Forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet
  • Marionette lines, brow lift, chin dimpling, jawline lift (Nefertiti lift)

Medical:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Hyperhidrosis (palms, underarms, feet)
  • Cervical dystonia, muscle spasms
  • Blepharospasm, strabismus, spasticity, overactive bladder
  • Injections are done with a fine needle; numbing cream is optional.
  • Duration: 15–30 minutes; no downtime, you can return to your daily activities immediately.
  • Results start to appear within 2–5 days and peak by week 2.
  • Effects last 3–6 months, depending on metabolism, dosage, and treatment area.

Common temporary side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, headache, and a feeling of heaviness in the treated area. Less common: drooping eyelid/brow, dry eyes or mouth, mild asymmetry. Rare but serious complications (e.g. allergic reaction, difficulty swallowing or breathing) are very uncommon.

Contraindications: pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infections in the injection area, severe neuromuscular disorders, or known allergy to the product.

Before: avoid alcohol, NSAIDs, and blood thinners 24–48 hours prior to reduce the risk of bruising.

Aftercare (first 24 hours):

  • Do not rub or massage the treated area
  • Stay upright for at least 3–4 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, sauna, and alcohol
  • Postpone facials or skin treatments for at least 48 hours

Treatments are usually repeated every 3–6 months. Consistent use can help prevent new wrinkles and may reduce the needed dose over time. Potential long-term drawbacks include slight muscle atrophy or a "frozen" look if overdone, and the rare development of resistance due to antibodies. Regular follow-ups with a qualified practitioner help minimize risks.
